Brunico Val Pusteria

The small city of Brunico Val Pusteria is located at a height of 838 meters and it’s encircled by the following mountain resorts: Riscone (German: Reischach), San Giorgio (tedesco Sankt Georgen), Stegona (tedesco Stegen), Lunes (German: Luns), Ameto (German: Amaten). During the medieval times, Brunico Val Pusteria (German: Bruneck, Ladin Bornech) was the valley economic motor, thanks to its central position. The most important historic building in Brunico is the Bishops Castle, ordered by Bruno von Kirchberg, the Bressanone (German: Brixen, Ladin Porsenù) bishop. The Brunico central street, whose buildings are characterized by picturesque architecture and tympana, witness the high level of wealth reached by the town. They are nowadays normal homes hosting cafés, restaurants and shops at the ground floor. Other important buildings in Brunico Val Pusteria are its historic gates like: the Rienza gate, the Ursuline gate and the Floriani gate.

Brunico, a city of merchants

Another attraction of Brunico are its markets. The most famous is the traditional Christmas market, which attires visitors not just from the surroundings, but from the rest of Italy and Europe as well. Brunico is full of guests, lights, Christmas trees, traditional and modern music; you can find many stalls downtown offering typical delicacies and drinks, handcrafts objects, to welcome Christmas with joy. Its “smaller brother” is the Stegona market, which takes place at the end of October every year. It’s the biggest in South Tyrol, where people of every age can find what they need.
